Hymenoplasty - Reconstruction of the hymen

The hymen, or virginal membrane, was given its name based on the Greek god Hymenaios, the god of marriage.

Some traditions, especially in Arabic and Southern European countries, attach great importance to this thin membrane, which partly covers the vaginal opening. It must be unharmed until the wedding night as a proof of virginity and purity.

However, the hymen can easily be torn due to mechanical strains. In this case, the hymen can be completely replaced.
