AESTHETIC SURGERY = PLASTIC SURGERY

The debate - and in some cases the fight - on who does what is certainly not abating. On the contrary, colleagues in many countries are having problems with members of other specialties performing a variety of aesthetic procedures. The good news is that health authorities in several countries are working on guidelines stipulating that especially cosmetic interventions are only to be carried out by duly trained specialists, i.e. plastic surgeons.

The debate - and in some cases the fight - on who does what is certainly not abating. On the contrary, colleagues in many countries are having problems with members of other specialties performing a variety of aesthetic procedures. Examples are many and well-known to all of us. Patients, more often than not, are victims of the unduly trained practitioners and regularly come to us to have catastrophic "surgical" results repaired.

The good news is that health authorities in several countries are working on guidelines stipulating that especially cosmetic interventions are only to be carried out by duly trained specialists, i.e. plastic surgeons. Of course, we have to ensure that such training is offered to our residents.

ESPRAS is interested to divulge the efforts of national health authorities on this matter.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Cordially,

Jean-Philippe Nicolai
